How to link your Windows licence to a Microsoft account
Linking makes life easier after a hardware change, especially a new motherboard.
How to check
On the Activation page, look for “with a digital licence linked to your Microsoft account”.
How to link
- Sign in to Windows with a Microsoft account, or add one in Accounts.
- Open the Activation page.
- Click Add an account if it is offered.
After replacing hardware
Run the Activation troubleshooter and choose “I changed hardware on this device recently”. Sign in and pick your PC from the list.
When linking will not help
OEM licences are tied to the original device, so a new motherboard usually needs a new licence. Retail licences can move.
Do I have to stay signed in with the Microsoft account?
No. After linking you can switch back to a local account. The link stays.
