Windows 11 without a Microsoft account: using a local account
Windows 11 pushes you to a Microsoft account during setup, but local accounts still exist.
What differs
A Microsoft account syncs settings and stores your recovery key. A local account stays on the PC only.
Way 1: switch after setup
Open Accounts, then Your info, and choose to sign in with a local account.
Way 2: add a separate local user
Accounts, Other users, Add account.
Way 3: Windows 11 Pro during setup
Choose the option for work or school, then domain join. Setup may then offer a local account. Microsoft changes these screens, so this can differ by build.
Worth knowing
Without a Microsoft account, keep your BitLocker recovery key safe yourself.
Does a local account affect activation?
No. Activation works the same.
