Windows activation errors: what the codes mean and how to fix them

Most activation errors come down to a few causes. Start with three checks, then find your code.

First checks

  • Internet works and the PC clock is correct.
  • The key matches the edition: Home or Pro.
  • You restarted after any recent changes.

Common codes

  • 0xC004F074: no KMS server found. The PC has a corporate licence. See the fix.
  • 0x803F7001: no valid licence found, often after a hardware change. See the fix.
  • 0xC004C003: the server blocked the key. See the fix.
  • 0xC004C008: the key reached its activation limit. Try phone activation, then contact the seller.
  • 0xC004F050: the key is invalid for this edition. Check the characters and the edition.
  • 0x8007007B: the key was typed in the wrong format, or a volume key cannot reach its server.

What not to do

Do not run activators. They add malware risk and do not fix the cause. Read why KMS activators are dangerous.
