Activation error 0xC004F074: causes and fixes
This code means Windows looked for a corporate activation server (KMS) and could not reach it.
Where the corporate key came from
- The PC used to belong to a company.
- Windows was installed from a volume image.
- Someone ran an activator earlier.
How to check
Run slmgr /dlv and read the description. VOLUME_KMSCLIENT means a KMS setup.
Fix on a home PC
- Open an administrator terminal.
- Run slmgr /ipk with your Retail or OEM key.
- Run slmgr /ato.
Fix on a work PC
Connect to the company network or VPN, or ask the IT department.
If an activator was used
Scan the PC first. Then consider a clean installation, since activators often leave services behind.
Do I need to reinstall Windows?
Usually not. Replacing the key is enough unless an activator damaged the system.
