Windows key for a laptop: when you need one and which to pick

Many laptops already have a licence. Check this before you buy.

When you do not need a key

A laptop sold with Windows has a key in its firmware. Reinstall the same edition and it activates by itself.

How to check

Run this in PowerShell as administrator: (Get-CimInstance SoftwareLicensingService).OA3xOriginalProductKey. A key on the screen means the laptop has a licence, and Home or Pro depends on the model.

When you do need one

• The laptop came with no Windows (FreeDOS or Linux).
• You want Pro on a Home laptop.

Which edition

Home for most. Pro for encryption and remote access.

Windows 10 or 11

Windows 11 if the laptop qualifies.
