Product key or digital licence in Windows: what is the difference
Both prove your right to use Windows, but they live in different places.
Product key
25 characters you type in. It is what you receive when you buy a key.
Digital licence
A record on Microsoft servers tied to your hardware and, if you link it, to your account. It is created when activation succeeds, including activation with a key.
How they connect
After you activate with a key, your PC usually has a digital licence as well. On reinstall you can skip the key and Windows activates itself once online.
How to tell which you have
The Activation page says “activated with a digital licence” or “with a product key”. A licence linked to your account adds that detail.
Practical advice
- Keep the key email anyway.
- Link the licence to your Microsoft account before changing hardware.
Do I lose my licence after a reinstall?
No. See [how to reinstall Windows without losing the licence](reinstall-windows-without-losing-license/).
