Windows 8.1 lost support on 10 January 2023, so it gets no security updates at all.

What no longer works well

Modern browsers stopped supporting it, and many apps refuse to install.

Who may still need it

Older machines running a specific program, or offline equipment.

How to lower the risk

  • Keep the PC offline if you can.
  • Back up to an external drive.
  • Do not use it for banking or email.

What to move to

If the hardware allows it, go to Windows 11. If not, Windows 10 is the realistic step for older PCs: see Windows 10 or 11.
